Product Description:
- Please note that the doctor may have prescribed the medicine for a different use and/or with a different dosage than stated in the package insert.

- Mesalazine (5-aminosalicylic acid) has a local effect in the intestine where it prevents inflammatory cells from adhering to the intestinal wall and reduces the effect of inflammatory signaling substances.
- Used to treat inflammatory diseases of the intestine, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis
.How To Use:
- Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you.
- Contact a doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.
Adults and the elderly:
Ulcerative colitis :
- The usual dose is 1600-2400 mg once a day or divided into 2-3 doses daily.
- In case of worsening, the dose can be increased to 4800 mg divided into 2-3 doses.
Crohn's disease :
Maintenance treatment:
- 1600-2400 mg per day divided into 2-3 doses. In case of worsening, the dose can be increased to 4800 mg divided into 2-3 doses.
Use of Asacol in children:
- There is only limited documentation for the effect on children (aged 6-18).
- Children who are 6 years or older
Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease :
Active disease:
- To be decided individually, starting dose is 30‑50 mg/kg/day in divided doses. Maximum dose: 75 mg/kg/day in divided doses. The total dose should not exceed 4 g/day.
Maintenance treatment:
- To be decided individually, starting dose is 15‑30 mg/kg/day in divided doses. The total dose should not exceed 2 g/day.
- It is usually recommended that half the adult dose be given to children with a body weight of up to 40 kg and the normal adult dose to those over 40 kg.
- The doctor's dosage instructions must always be followed.
- The enteric tablets are swallowed whole.
- They must not be chewed, crushed or split before swallowing.
- If you think that the effect of Asacol is too strong or too weak, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist about this.
If you take too much Asacol:
- Contact a doctor, hospital or the Poisons Information Center if you have taken too much medicine or if a child has taken medicine by accident.
- For other questions about the medicine, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
If you have forgotten to take Asacol:
- You must not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
- If one or more doses have been forgotten, the next dose should be taken at the usual time.
Warnings And Precautions:
Do not use Asacol:
- If you are allergic to mesalazine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
- You have a medical history of allergy to salicylates.
- You have severely impaired liver function.
- You have severely impaired kidney function.
Talk to your doctor before taking Asacol if you have a medical condition or diseases, this especially applies to:
- If you have had reduced kidney function. This is especially important if you are older. When you start taking Asacol, your doctor may take regular blood tests to check that your kidneys are working properly.
- If you have liver disease (increased levels of liver enzymes).
- If you have had an allergic reaction in the heart such as an inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) or pericarditis (pericarditis).
- If you have previously had allergic reactions in the heart caused by mesalazine, you must not start treatment with Asacol again.
- Caution must be exercised in patients who have previously had an allergic reaction in the heart regardless of the cause.
- If you suffer from lung disease, e.g. Asthma , your doctor may want to check your breathing from time to time.
- If you have ever had side effects from sulfasalazine or another medicine used to treat ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease .
- If necessary, your doctor will carry out blood tests before and during treatment with Asacol to check that the blood values (for example the number of cells in the blood) are normal.
