Our step-by-step guide to bathing your baby

Bath time is a great way to bond with your baby and get them relaxed and ready for bed. Follow our five steps for a calm, tear-free routine

Step 1

Be prepared! Keep the bathroom warm to avoid your little one getting cold. Get everything you need including towels, clothes and bath products all within arm’s reach before you start. You should never leave your baby unattended in the bath, even for a second.

Step 2

Run the cold water first and then gradually add warm water to get the right temperature. Swirl the water with your hand to get rid of any hot patches. If you have one, use a bath thermometer and check it’s no warmer than 98.6°F or body temperature. Alternatively, dip your elbow to gauge the temperature.

Step 3

Undress your baby down to their nappy and wrap them in a towel to keep them warm. Wash their face, neck and ears with cotton wool soaked in warm water. Then remove the nappy and clean their bottom.

Step 4

Now it’s bath time! Hold your baby around their upper back – so your forearm supports their head and back – and lower them into the bath, keeping their head clear of the water. Use your free hand to scoop water over their body, gently washing them. You can use a baby bath seat instead from around four months, or when your baby is able to hold themselves up.

Step 5

Afterwards, carefully lift them out of the bath and wrap them up in a towel as soon as possible. Your little one probably won’t like the change in temperature so pat them dry quickly. Now is a good time to use a baby oil or lotion to lock in moisture. The massage will help relax them too, so they’re ready for bed.

When you can make time for a precious five-minute shower, either leave your little one with your partner or family member, or keep them within eyesight. A bouncer is a good idea as they can’t wriggle away.
