How to help a teething baby

If your baby is going through a grizzly, dribble, chewing-everything-in-sight phase, then their teeth are probably about to make an appearance. For many, it can be a distressing and uncomfortable time. But there are some ways you can help your baby and ease their discomfort. These are our top five tips

1. Give them something to chew on With a new set of teeth coming through, your baby is going to want to put them to good use. Giving them a teething ring is a safe way to help them relieve pressure on their gums. And it can help distract them too.

2. Try a teething gel Rubbing a pea-sized amount of teething gel onto your baby’s gums can help reduce inflammation and swelling. If you don’t have a gel to hand, the pressure of just your finger on the gums may help ease the discomfort – and they’ll probably like chewing on your finger too!

3. Stay cool When your baby’s gums are inflamed, letting them chew on something cold will help soothe their symptoms. Try soaking a flannel or cloth in cold water, wring it out, and then let them chew on it. You could also put a teething ring in the fridge before giving it to them, and if your baby has started eating solid foods, try      giving them cold purée or yogurt.

4. Keep them drool-free The more your baby dribbles the more it can begin to irritate their skin. Use a soft muslin to gently wipe or dab the drool from their chin to reduce redness and a gentle barrier cream at nighttime to moisturize their skin.

5. Comfort and distract It may seem obvious, but a cuddle with mommy and some extra love and attention may be all your baby needs to calm them down. Play with them or give them a warm bath to distract them from the pain.

TIP: When their first teeth begin to come through, it’s time to register your baby with a dentist. Even the littlest of people can get tooth decay, so make sure you’re looking after them from the beginning.
