The complete guide to baby-proofing your home

As a parent, keeping your baby safe is your number one priority, but once your child starts crawling (at around eight months) it can get trickier. Now they’re on the move, the first place they’ll want to explore is their home, so here are five ways to make your space safer for curious little ones…

 

1- Guard your stairs – steps are the ultimate falling hazard, so install baby gates at the top and bottom of the staircase.

 

2- Secure furniture – once crawling, your little one will start to pull themselves up using furniture such as bookcases or dressers, so make sure all heavy furniture is secured to the wall. Don’t forget to attach corner guards to sharp or hard edges on coffee tables and the like.

 

3- Install latches – add child-proof latches to fridges, trash cans, toilets, cupboards, drawers, and any other furniture that you don’t want little fingers tugging open. Move cleaning products, medicines, and other possibly dangerous items into one of your latched cupboards or store them out of the baby’s reach.

 

4- Hide cords – when you’re not using them, keep electrical appliances such as kettles or hair styling tools unplugged and make sure the cords aren’t left dangling for little hands. Tuck TV wires behind other furniture, out of reach, and make sure blind cords aren’t accessible to little ones.

 

5- Cover plug sockets – these are right in the eye-line for a crawling baby, making them extra appealing, so attach plug socket covers to stop inquisitive fingers.
