Product Description:
- The active ingredient of this drug called Metformin.
- Metformin XR Extended-Release Tablets are oral antihyperglycemic drugs used in the management of type 2 diabetes.
- It controls blood sugar (glucose) and helps your body use insulin effectively.
- This medication is often combined with changes to diet and exercise.
- This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions.
How To Use:
- There is no fixed dosage regimen for the management of hyperglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes with METFORMIN XR .
- Dosage of METFORMIN XR must be individualized on the basis of both effectiveness and tolerance, while not exceeding the maximum recommended daily doses.
- The maximum recommended daily dose of METFORMIN XR in adults is 2000 mg.
- METFORMIN XR should generally be given once daily with the evening meal.
- METFORMIN XR should be started at a low dose, with gradual dose escalation, both to reduce gastrointestinal side effects and to permit identification of the minimum dose required for adequate glycemic control of the patient.
Adults:
- The usual starting dose of METFORMIN XR (metformin hydrochloride) Extended-Release Tablets is 500 mg once daily with the evening meal.
- Dosage increases should be made in increments of 500 mg weekly, up to a maximum of 2000 mg once daily with the evening meal.
- If glycemic control is not achieved on METFORMIN XR 2000 mg once daily, a trial of METFORMIN XR 1000 mg twice daily should be considered.
- If higher doses of metformin are required, METFORMIN should be used at total daily doses up to 2550 mg administered in divided daily doses, as described above.
Warnings And precautions:
Risk of lactic acidosis:
- Metformin hydrochloride may cause a very rare but very serious side effect called lactic acidosis, particularly if your kidneys are not working properly, if you have uncontrolled diabetes, serious infections, liver problems, dehydration.
- Stop taking metformin hydrochloride and contact a doctor or the nearest hospital immediately if you experience some of the symptoms of lactic acidosis, as this condition may lead to coma.
Symptoms of lactic acidosis:
- Vomiting
- Stomach ache
- Muscle cramps
- A general feeling of not being well with severe tiredness
- Difficulty in breathing
- Reduced body temperature and heartbeat
Risk of hypoglycemia:
- If you take metformin hydrochloride together with other medicines to treat diabetes, that can cause hypoglycemia.
- If you experience symptoms of hypoglycemia such as weakness, dizziness, increased sweating, fast heart beating, vision disorders or difficulty in concentration, it usually helps to eat or drink something containing sugar.
Possible side effects of metformin hydrochloride:
- All medicines can have side effects. Sometimes they are serious, most of the time they are not.
- You may need medical treatment if you get some of the side effects.
- Tell your doctor if you notice any of the following and they worry you:
- Lactic acidosis which can lead to coma
- Digestive problems such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and loss of appetite
- Change in taste
Other medicines and metformin hydrochloride:
- Tell your doctor if you are using, have recently used or might use any other medicines.
- Medicines which increase urine production (diuretics)
- Medicines used to treat pain and inflammation (nsaids)
- Certain medicines for the treatment of high blood pressure
- Beta-2 agonists such as salbutamol (to treat asthma)
- Corticosteroids
- Other medicines used to treat diabetes
