Levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (IUS):

  • The product consists of an inserter and levonorgestrel intrauterine system, which is loaded at the tip of the inserter.
  • Inserter components are an insertion tube, plunger, flange, body, and slider.
  • The system consists of a white or almost white hormone-elastomer core, mounted on a T-body and covered in opaque tubing, which regulates the release of levonorgestrel.
  • The white T-body has a loop at one end and two arms at the other end.
  • Brown removal threads are attached to the loop.
  • The T-frame of Mirena contains barium sulphate, which makes it visible in X-ray examination.

How to Insert Mirena:

  • It is strongly recommended that Mirena should only be inserted by physicians/healthcare professionals who are experienced in Mirena insertions and/or have undergone sufficient training for Mirena insertion.

Warnings And Precautions:

  • are or might be pregnant; Mirena cannot be used as an emergency contraceptive.
  • have a serious pelvic infection called pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or have had PID in the past unless you have had a normal pregnancy after the infection went away.
  • have an untreated genital infection now.
  • have had a serious pelvic infection in the past 3 months after pregnancy.
  • have or suspect you might have cancer of the uterus or cervix.
  • have bleeding from the vagina that has not been explained.
  • have liver disease or a liver tumor.
  • have breast cancer or any other cancer that is sensitive to progestin (a female hormone), now or in the past.
  • have an intrauterine device in your uterus already.
  • have a condition of the uterus that changes the shape of the uterine cavity, such as large fibroid tumors.
  • are allergic to levonorgestrel, silicone, polyethylene, silica, barium sulfate or iron oxide.

Ingredients:

  • Levonorgestrel 52mg.
  • The initial release of levonorgestrel is approximately 20 micrograms per day.
