Product Description:

  • Dimethyl fumarate is used to treat relapsing multiple sclerosis (relapsing-remitting MS ) in adult patients .
MS is a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system ( CNS ), including the brain and spinal cord.
  • Relapsing MS is characterized by repeated seizures (attacks) with symptoms in the nervous system. Symptoms vary from patient to patient, but usually include difficulty walking, feeling off balance, and visual disturbances (e.g., blurred or double vision ).
  • These symptoms may disappear completely when the attack is over, but some problems may remain.

How Dimethyl fumarate  works:

  • Dimethyl fumarate appears to work by preventing the body's defense system from damaging the brain and spinal cord.
  • This can also help delay future worsening of MS .

Warnings And Precautions:

  • If you are allergic to dimethyl fumarate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
  • If you are suspected of having a rare brain infection called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (pml) or if you have been diagnosed with pml.
  • Dimethyl fumarate can affect the number of white blood cells, kidneys and liver.
  • Before you start taking Dimethyl fumarate , the doctor will take blood tests to check the number of white blood cells and check that the kidneys and liver are working properly.
  • The doctor will check this at regular intervals during the treatment.
  • If the number of white blood cells decreases during treatment, the doctor may consider doing further tests or stopping the treatment.

Talk to your doctor before using Dimethyl fumarate  if you have:

  • severe kidney disease.
  • severe liver disease.
  • a disease of the stomach or intestines.
  • serious infection (such as pneumonia ).
  • Herpes zoster ( shingles ) can occur during treatment with dimethyl fumarate.
  • In some cases, serious complications have occurred. Talk to your doctor immediately if you suspect you have symptoms of shingles .
  • If you think your MS is getting worse (e.g. weakness or visual disturbances) or if you notice new symptoms, talk to your doctor immediately, as these may be symptoms of a rare infection of the brain called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML).
  • PML is a serious condition that can lead to severe disability or death.
  • A rare but serious kidney disease ( Fanconi syndrome ) has been reported for a medicine containing dimethyl fumarate in combination with other fumaric acid esters, which is used to treat psoriasis (a skin disease).
  • Talk to your doctor immediately if you have increased urination, are more thirsty and drink more than normal, if your muscles seem weaker, if you break a bone or have pain. The doctor may consider investigating this further.

Children and youth:

  • Dimethyl fumarate is not recommended for use in children and adolescents, because there is limited experience with the use of dimethyl fumarate in this patient group.
  • Other medicines and Dimethyl fumarate

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are using, have recently used or plan to use other medicines, in particular:

  • medicines containing fumaric acid esters (fumarates) used to treat psoriasis
  • medicines that affect the body's immune system, including other medicines used to treat MS , such as fingolimod, natalizumab, teriflunomide, alemtuzumab, ocrelizumab or cladribine, or some treatments often used against cancer (rituximab or mitoxantrone).
  • medicines that affect the kidneys, including some antibiotics (used to treat infections ), " diuretics", certain types of painkillers ( such as ibuprofen and other similar anti -inflammatory medicines bought without a prescription) and medicines containing lithium
  • If you use Dimethyl fumarate at the same time as certain types of vaccines ( live vaccines ), you may get an infection .
  • This should therefore be avoided. The doctor will advise whether other forms of vaccines ( non-live vaccines ) should be given.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding:

  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

Pregnancy:

  • Do not use Dimethyl fumarate if you are pregnant without first talking to your doctor.

Breastfeeding:

  • It is not known whether the active ingredient in Dimethyl fumarate passes into breast milk.
  • Dimethyl fumarate should not be used during breastfeeding.
  • The doctor will help you decide whether you should stop breast-feeding or stop using Dimethyl fumarate .
  • This involves a balancing act between the benefits of breastfeeding for the child and the benefits of treatment for the mother.
