Product Description:

  • Sutent contains the active substance sunitinib, which is a protein kinase inhibitor and is used in the treatment of cancer.
  • It prevents the activity of a special group of proteins, which are involved in the growth and spread of cancer cells.

Sutent is used in the treatment of adults with the following types of cancer:

  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), a type of stomach and bowel cancer , where imatinib (another cancer medicine ) no longer works, or if you cannot take imatinib.
  • Metastatic renal cell carcinoma (MRCC), a type of kidney cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
  • Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (pnet) (tumors of hormone-producing cells in the pancreas) that are advanced or cannot be removed with surgery.
  • Ask your doctor if you have any questions about how Sutent works or why the medicine has been prescribed for you.

How To Use:

  • Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you.
  • Contact a doctor if you are unsure.
  • The doctor will prescribe the dose that is right for you, and the dose will depend on the type of cancer to be treated.

If you are being treated for:

  • GIST or MRCC: The usual dose is 50 mg once daily for 28 days (4 weeks), followed by 14 days (2 weeks) of rest (no medication), given in 6-week cycles.
  • Pnet: The usual dose is 37.5 mg once daily without a break in treatment.
  • Your doctor will decide what dose to take and if and when you need to stop treatment with Sutent.
  • Sutent can be taken with or without food.

If you take too much Sutent:

  • If you accidentally take too many capsules, contact your doctor immediately. You may need medical help.

If you have forgotten to take Sutent:

  • You should not take a double dose to replace a missed dose.

Warnings and precautions:

Do not use Sutent:

  • If you are allergic to sunitinib or any of the other ingredients in Sutent.

Talk to your doctor before using Sutent:

  • If you have high blood pressure . Sutent can increase blood pressure. Your doctor will check your blood pressure during treatment with Sutent and you may be given blood pressure-lowering drugs, if necessary.
  • If you have or have had a blood disorder, bleeding problems or a tendency to bruise.
  • Treatment with Sutent can lead to a higher risk of bleeding or lead to changes in the amount of certain cells in the blood that can cause anaemia , or affect the blood's ability to coagulate. If you take warfarin or acenocoumarol, medicines that thin the blood to prevent blood clots, there may be a greater risk of bleeding.
  • Tell your doctor if you have bleeding during treatment with Sutent.
  • If you have heart problems.
  • Sutent can cause heart problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you feel very tired, have shortness of breath, or have swollen feet and ankles.
  • If you have an abnormal heart rhythm.
  • Sutent can cause abnormal heart rhythm. Your doctor may take an electrocardiogram to monitor your heart rhythm during treatment with Sutent.
  • Tell your doctor if you feel dizzy, faint, or have an abnormal heartbeat while taking Sutent.
  • If you have recently had a problem with blood clots in your veins and/or arteries (type of blood vessels), including stroke , heart attack , embolism or thrombosis .
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you experience symptoms such as chest pain or pressure in the chest, pain in the arm, back, neck or jaw, shortness of breath, numbness or weakness on one side of your body, difficulty speaking, headache or dizziness during treatment with Sutent.
  • If you have or have had an aneurysm (enlargement and weakening of the blood vessel wall) or a tear in the blood vessel wall.
  • If you have or have had damage to the smallest blood vessels, so-called thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA).
  • Tell your doctor if you develop a fever , feel chronically tired, have bruising, bleeding, swelling, feel confused, have impaired vision or seizures.
  • If you have problems with your metabolism. Sutent can cause problems with the thyroid gland.
  • Tell your doctor if you become more tired than usual, generally feel colder than other people or your voice deepens while taking Sutent.
  • Your metabolism should be checked before taking Sutent and regularly during treatment. If your thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroxine , it may be necessary to give this hormone in tablet form.
  • If you have or have had disorders of the pancreas or gall bladder .

Tell your doctor if you develop any of the following signs and symptoms:

  • upper abdominal pain, nausea , vomiting and fever . Such symptoms may be due to inflammation of the pancreas or gall bladder.

  • Bisphosphonates are drugs used to prevent bone complications, and which may have been given for another disease.
  • If you have or have had skin and subcutaneous diseases. During treatment with this medicine, you can get painful sores on the skin (pyoderma gangrenosum) or infection in the skin/soft tissue that spreads quickly and can be life-threatening (necrotizing fasciitis).
  • Contact your doctor immediately if symptoms of infection occur around a skin injury, including fever , pain, redness, swelling or the presence of pus or blood. This will usually go away after you stop sunitinib. Serious skin reactions ( Stevens-Johnson syndrome , toxic epidermal necrolysis and erythema multiforme ) have been seen with the use of sunitinib.
The skin reactions start with red bordered or round spots with a blister in the middle.
