Medicine intake isn’t an indication of health deterioration!

Medicine intake is not an indication of health deterioration.

It means that you have Hyperglycemia, it means your blood sugar levels are too high. You should not neglect hyperglycemia as it can lead to dangerous health complications, including an overall worsening of diabetes. The longer you have diabetes, the harder it is to control blood sugar levels through exercising and a healthy diet. With passing time, you might need to combine a healthy diet and exercising with one or more medicines, including insulin to help you manage your blood sugar level. Medicine intake doesn’t necessarily mean negligence on your side, but your diabetes might have developed triggering a change in treatment requirements.

What medications to take for diabetes treatment?

  • Tablets: Blood sugar adjustment tablets are used to treat type 2 diabetes only. There are various classes of drugs for these tablets. Each type works differently than the other. Your doctor might prescribe medicine from one or more types. Your treatment plan might include tablets along with insulin and other drug injections. You need to know the basic information about your prescribed medicines, including the name of the medicine, how it works, the perfect time to take it and any potential side effects. It is important to continue your exercise and diet program along with your medicines.

  • Medicines are given by injection (non-insulin): Medicines that help control blood sugar levels after meals, include Exenatide (Byetta), liraglutide (Victoza) and Pramlintide (SymlinPen), which can help you lose weight too. Exenatide and liraglutide were approved for people with type 2 diabetes, whereas Pramlintide was approved for people with type 1 diabetes and insulin users with type 2 diabetes. Side effects of these medicines include low blood sugar and nausea.

  • Insulin: Insulin is a medicine that is taken by injection to lower blood sugar levels. It is the most common type of medicine used for type 1 diabetes treatment. Meglitinides, on the other hand, is used by people with type 2 diabetes to control blood sugar, but they might also need insulin intake.
