What is Liraglutide and what is it used for?
Liraglutide is a medicine used for weight loss. It is similar to a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which is released from the intestine after eating. Liraglutide works by acting on receptors in the brain that control appetite, helping you feel fuller and less hungry. This may help you eat less food and reduce body weight.
Liraglutide is used for weight loss in addition to diet and exercise in adults aged 18 years and above who have:
A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher (obesity), or
A BMI of 27 kg/m² to less than 30 kg/m² (overweight) with weight-related health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal blood fat levels, or breathing problems during sleep (sleep apnea).
Do not use Liraglutide:
If you are allergic to liraglutide or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
Warnings and Precautions:
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using liraglutide if you:
Have severe heart failure
Are aged 75 years or older
Have kidney disease or are on dialysis
Have liver problems
Have severe stomach or intestinal problems causing delayed gastric emptying (gastroparesis) or inflammatory bowel disease
Have diabetes (do not use liraglutide as a substitute for insulin)
Have or have had pancreatic disease
Experience severe upper abdominal pain, usually worse on the right side under the ribs
Have thyroid disease, including thyroid nodules or enlargement
Experience palpitations or rapid heartbeat during treatment
Possible Side Effects of Liraglutide:
Like all medicines, liraglutide can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) have been reported rarely. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or rapid heartbeat.
Cases of pancreatitis have been reported uncommonly.
Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you notice:
Severe and persistent abdominal pain that may radiate to the back, with nausea and vomiting, as this may be a sign of pancreatitis.
Very Common Side Effects:
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation — these usually disappear after a few days or weeks.
Other Medicines and Liraglutide:
Tell your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse if you are taking:
Diabetes medicines such as sulfonylureas (e.g., glimepiride or glibenclamide) or insulin, as the risk of low blood sugar may increase. Your doctor may adjust your dose.
Warfarin or other oral anticoagulants. More frequent blood tests may be required.
How to Use Liraglutide:
Treatment begins with a low dose that is gradually increased during the first five weeks.
The starting dose is 0.6 mg once daily for at least one week.
Your doctor will instruct you to increase the dose by 0.6 mg weekly until reaching the recommended dose of 3.0 mg once daily.
Once the recommended dose is reached, continue using it as directed. Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
Your doctor will regularly evaluate your treatment.
Storage Instructions:
Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use after the expiry date stated on the label.
Before first use: Store in a refrigerator (2°C–8°C). Do not freeze.
After first use: The pen can be stored for one month below 30°C or refrigerated (2°C–8°C). Do not freeze.
Keep the pen cap on when not in use to protect from light.
Do not use if the solution is not clear and colorless or nearly colorless.
Do not dispose of medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of unused medicines.
