Indications: Who is it for?
Adults aged 18 years and older with type 2 diabetes when diet and exercise are not enough to control blood sugar. It may be used alone when metformin cannot be used, or with other diabetes medicines.
How to Use
Inject once weekly under the skin of the thigh, abdomen or upper arm. It can be used at any time of day, with or without meals. Use a new needle for every injection and do not share the pen or needles.
Dosage & Administration
Starting dose: 0.25 mg once weekly for 4 weeks.
After 4 weeks: 0.5 mg once weekly.
The doctor may increase the dose to 1 mg once weekly if blood sugar is not adequately controlled.
Do not change the dose unless directed by your doctor.
Warnings & Precautions
Do not use as a substitute for insulin.
Do not use in type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Talk to your doctor if you have diabetic eye disease, kidney problems or symptoms of gallbladder problems.
Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea may cause dehydration.
Seek immediate medical attention for severe or persistent stomach pain or signs of a severe allergic reaction.
Not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years.
Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, indigestion, stomach pain, bloating, constipation, dizziness, tiredness, reduced appetite and weight loss.
Low blood sugar may occur when used with insulin or sulfonylureas.
Serious side effects include diabetic retinopathy complications, acute pancreatitis and severe allergic reactions.
Drug Interactions
Tell your doctor if you use insulin, sulfonylureas, warfarin or similar medicines that reduce blood clotting, or any other prescription, non-prescription or herbal medicines.
Contraindications
Do not use if allergic to semaglutide or any other ingredient.
Do not use if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
